Wednesday, October 2nd saw the Golden Knights take on a San Jose Sharks team that was missing Evander Kane due to a three-game suspension and Erik Karlsson due to personal matters. This was the season opener for the 2019-2020 season, however the memory of the Sharks knocking out the Knights from the previous postseason was fresh in the minds of the T-Mobile Arena crowd. This only added to the emotions, and decibel levels, radiating off the players and fans.
The first period was off to a flying start as both Mark Stone and Reilly Smith scored in the opening five minutes of the match. Unfortunately, the first period also saw Nate Schmidt pick up a knee injury that required the help of a couple VGK staff members to help him off the ice. He did not return to the game and there is no further update on the injury at the time of this article being posted. Marcus Sorensen of the Sharks scored the teams only goal of not just the period, but of the entire game.
The second period had arguably the highlight of not just the game, but of the entire match day for the NHL. Cody Glass, the Golden Knights first ever draft pick making his first ever start for the Knights scored his first ever goal for the team. He received a standing ovation from the crowd, creating a sight that you genuinely "had to be there" to experience. Cody Glass also goes down in the history books as the youngest Golden Knights goal scorer, being just 20 years and 184 days old.
The third period, and the game, was capped off with another Reilly Smith goal to end the game at 4-1. The next game for the Knights is against the Sharks once again, but only this time, it will be played in San Jose. Puck drop will be on Friday, October 4th at 7:30pm
