Women’s Volleyball: Sept. 30 vs. Air Force
The Rebels Women's Volleyball continued their win streak as they defeated Air Force in their Home Opener 3-1.
By the end of the match UNLV had a total of 58 kills to Air Force’s 50. Mariena Hayden was recognized before the game as the new all-time career hits leader at UNLV. The fifth year senior and another senior Milicia Tasic were nothing short of impressive. UNLV led all across the board in assists (54-45), aces (10-2) and digs (39-28).
OCT 2 VS NEW MEXICO
UNLV Women’s Volleyball won their third match in a row against New Mexico. UNLV has now won 41 out of 47 of their matches dating back to 2019.
The Rebels handed the Lobos their first MW loss with another dominating game. UNLV outhit New Mexico .258 to .145, leading in kills (55-39), assists (47-33) and digs (55-47). Senior setter Lauryn Burt had a match-high 22 assists, and junior Paris Oliveira recorded a team-leading 12 digs.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: @ AIR FORCE
The UNLV women's soccer team dropped to 0-3 in the mountain west, falling 4-3 after a double overtime loss.
Junior Lourdes Bosch got the scoring started in the fifth minute. After Air Force took the lead at the 15th minute, the entire game seemed to be a back and forth battle. While the battle went back to back between goals shared from junior Taylie Liddell, Junior Marcella Brooks was determined to not let them walk away with a win so easily. She forced overtime with a 76th minute goal.
Air Force was able to walk away 4-3 in the second OT. Overall, UNLV out-shot Air Force 19-12, marking a second straight game the Rebels held the advantage in that category but couldn't come away with the victory.
FOOTBALL @ UTSA
Freshman quarterback Cameron Friel threw for 307 yards and a touchdown in the game. In the second quarter, Friel threw a 63-yard touchdown to Steve Jenkins.Daniel Gutierrez hit a short field goal to give a 10-7 lead.
However, in the end it was the turnovers that killed them. Two interceptions and a lost fumble by Friel that led to two straight UTSA touchdowns. UTSA came away with a 24-17 win, dropping the Rebels to 0-5.
MEN'S HOCKEY SWEEP SERIES OPENER VS ILLINOIS
Rebel Hockey completed their first series of the 2021-22 season with a sweep of the Illinois Fighting Illini to kick off the season 2-0.
UNLV gradually cleaned up and gained momentum as captain Jared Erickson buried a shot from the low slot to put the Rebels on the board 1-0 at the 14:30 mark in the first period. Through two goals by Alec Johnson in the second period, and one goal from Max Johnson in the third, the Rebels extended the lead to 4-1. They would not relinquish that lead.
The Rebels came away with a 5-3 win Saturday night. Despite more penalty trouble in the second and third period, they were making crisper passes and playing better in transition.
MEN’S SOCCER: at Seattle University
UNLV’s Men Soccer team recorded a season high with nine shots on goal Friday night, they fell short 2-0.
Senior Bailey Lethermen led the team with three shots on goal. Followed by seniors Nicolas Likulia, Aedon Kyra and sophomore Louis Hiepen. The Seattle Redhawks were able to take the lead going into halftime a penalty kick at 31 minutes. Through a sticky Redhawks defense, the Rebels just could not get the ball into the net of Akili Kasim. As seconds left of the second half, the Redhawks were able to seal the deal making it 2-0.
At SAN JOSE STATE
UNLV took a second straight 2-0 loss. In the 18th-minute, the Spartans were able to take the lead 1-0. After that, it seemed like a battle for the Rebels to try to get their first Mountain West win. Juniors Skyler Goo and Kai Lange both led with three shots on goal. San Jose State scored a second goal with one second left on the clock.
The Rebels host the Houston Baptists Friday at 3:00pm and Chicago State on Sunday at 4 p.m Peter Johann Memorial Field in which they hope to get their first conference goal.
