For the first time ever, the WNBA All-Star Weekend made its way to Las Vegas, bringing along a fan fest, 3-point contest and skills challenge on Friday at Mandalay Bay Event Center. This is the first time All-Star Friday Night has been held since 2006.
The festivities began early with a fan fest where fans could buy merchandise, enjoy drinks, and participate in a variety of activities, such as free throw contests.
Fans then made their way into the event center to enjoy an afternoon full of entertainment beginning with the Skills Challenge in which Diamond DeShields, guard for the Chicago Sky, came out on top and took home the trophy.
“The energy was amazing. I’ve been showing mad love to Vegas, but I’ll say it again. Shout out to all the people here with the Aces and with the league that put this event on. That was great energy in there. We tried to do everything we could to make it fun for the fans and I think that they enjoyed themselves as well,” said DeShields.
While Aces guard Kayla McBride received a huge ovation from her Vegas fanbase, she ultimately didn’t end up winning the WNBA 3-point contest. McBride came up short by one point and was beaten by Shekinna Stricklen of the Connecticut Sun, who scored 23 points.
“I really was pushing for 25 to 27 because [McBride was] in the hometown, got the crowd, I really had a feeling she was going to get hot,” said Stricklen.
WNBA All-Star Weekend will continue Saturday with the 2019 WNBA All-Star Game beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Mandalay Bay Event Center.
