UNLV women’s soccer fought a physical game against the New Mexico Aggies with a penalty kick, securing the shutout victory 1-0. This was the program’s final non-conference home game of the season, improving to 6-2 overall.
"We always talk about how Sundays are gritty games and I’m just really proud of the girls for coming out hungry and with a lot of fight,” Head Coach Jenny Ruiz-Williams said. “I think New Mexico is a great team and very well-coached, and I expect them to have a great year in their conference. But kudos to our girls because they fought super hard until the end.”
While the Rebel defense fought hard to keep the Aggies from scoring, the Rebel offense only managed to have four shots (one on goal) compared to the Aggies’ eight shots (three on goal).
Both teams demonstrated excellent offense and defense as the ball bounced from one end of the field to another keeping all the girls on their toes.
Taylie Liddell’s first career goal came five minutes into the game as she converted her penalty attempt for the Rebels, which followed a foul drawn by junior midfielder Lourdes Bosch in the Aggies’ defensive box.
"It feels really good. That was actually my first career goal, so it was really exciting,” Liddell said. “I wasn’t nervous or anything, I was just like ‘oh I got this’. We held our own and I’m proud that we held them back as much as we did.”
Sophomore Taylor Book anchored the Scarlet and Gray defensive side to its third clean sheet of the year with three saves in 90 minutes for her second consecutive win. This was her first career shutout.
Even with a well-battled game, New Mexico was not able to keep up with the Rebels and ultimately lost the game.
The Rebels will now hit the road for their final non-conference game at Loyola Marymount next Sunday at 1 pm PT, before returning home for its conference opener vs Boise State on Friday, Sept. 24th.
