The New Kid On The Block

Author: D'Ante Haigler

Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Kevin Garnett are just a few names of guys who were drafted right out of high school to the NBA.

Usually, 19-year-olds are expected to graduate high school in the summer and attend college. But that wasn’t the case for former Brewster Academy point guard, Jalen Lecque.

The 6’3” stocky young guard caught the attention of the nation when basketball mixtapes such as Ballislife showcased his athletic skills and explosive dunks. Eventually earning him the nickname, “Baby Westbrook.”

Lecque, who was once committed to North Carolina State University, learned that he met the age requirement for the NBA draft and forwent his season with the Wolfpack. He would enter the 2019 draft in hopes his name would be called. Unfortunately, it wasn’t however, his agent helped him secure a four-year deal, but only two years are guaranteed with the Phoenix Suns.

At just 19 years old, Lecque is showcasing those same explosive skills at this year’s NBA Summer League. While averaging 8.7 points and 3 assists, in the three games that the Suns played, it is no wonder why Coach Willie Green showed high appraisal for his young guard.

“He’s a really, really, really good young player,” Green said. “Creates a lot of energy when he’s in the game.”

His next task is focusing on the mental aspect of the NBA. “Here I got to think more and just use my mental more.” Lecque said.

Lecque could be a diamond in the rough in the long run, but as of right now, he is just a rookie trying to earn his minutes.
