UNLV baseball swept the San Diego State Aztecs this weekend for the final home series at Earl E. Wilson Stadium of the season finishing with an at-home record of 17-3.
Games one and two took place on Saturday for a doubleheader, where the Rebels took both games to claim the series early on.
The Rebels won game one of the two-game bill 14-4, led by Jack-Thomas Wold’s two home runs and Eric Bigani’s solo home run.
Seven different Rebels scored en route to the blowout victory, with James Gamble leading all UNLV players in runs with his four runs scored.
Game two saw the Rebels carry over their mounds of momentum from the first tilt, jumping out to a six-run lead over the Aztecs in the second inning.
Four shutout innings by San Diego State allowed the Aztecs to rally back and score 10 unanswered runs to put themselves up 7-10.
UNLV would begin to claw back in the seventh and eighth innings, seeing two lone runs being scored in each frame respectively. The bottom of the ninth saw UNLV win in walk-off fashion following Wold’s two-run single with the bases loaded.
Wold put on a show in Saturday’s doubleheader, seeing the first baseman finished the day with a .750 batting average on seven hits, three of those being doubles and two being home runs.
Sunday’s game brought Senior Day, where Rebel baseball honored seniors AJ Amelburu, Austin Bryan, Myles Denson, Jason Hare, Chase Maddux, Larry Wuaney, Trevor Rosenberg, Bradley Spooner, Alex Tisminezky, and Conner Woods.
The Rebels dominated Sunday’s matchup off the back of UNLV pitcher Justin Sharman’s complete game.
Scoring would take time to show up for the Rebels, seeing both teams stay scoreless until the fifth inning where UNLV would open up the game and score three runs off of a Wold two-RBI triple, and an Edarian Williams sac fly to bring Wold in to score.
The Rebels continued their scoring in the seventh with a scoring frenzy started by none other than Wold after a solo home run to center field. Denson would register an RBI single to drive Willaims in for a run to extend the Rebel lead to 5-0.
The eighth inning saw the Aztecs score their lone run of the game after an RBI double from Mike Jarvis to score Carson Matthews. The Rebels notched their final runs of the game, with Bigani knocking a two-RBI single, and Rylan Charles hitting a sac fly to score Bigani for the eight and final run of the game for UNLV.
"We had two great pitching performances from [Bradley] Spooner and [Josh] Sharman, and that always makes it easier,” UNLV Baseball Head Coach Stan Stotle said, “and our offense did what they’ve done all year which is be consistent.”
The Rebels fell behind once all weekend, which was in their game two walk-off victories Saturday.
Looking ahead, the Rebels close out their 2021 campaign on the road against Fresno State. UNLV swept the Bulldogs in their previous meeting at Earl Stadium, and the Rebels head into their final season series boasting a 19-11 overall record, and a 14-10 conference record.
