UNLV Women’s Soccer Dominates San Jose With a 3-0 Shutout

After three straight away games in California, UNLV’s women’s soccer returned to their home field to shutout the San Jose Spartans for the second time this season.

The Rebels scored 3 unanswered goals in their return home Friday night. They remain undefeated at Peter Johann Memorial Field this season. UNLV improved their overall record to 3-2-1.

The Rebels managed to stay in control of the ball from the very beginning of the game, which paid off when Lourdes Bosch tapped the ball into the bottom right of the net for the 1-0 lead.

“[The Spartans] put up a good fight, their energy was high the whole game and we really had to concentrate on the game the entire time,” Bosch said. “It was a great relief to score that early on. San Jose fought pretty well in the beginning and scoring that goal gave us some confidence.”

That goal was Bosch’s first of the season, and set the tone for the rest of the game. The team prevented the Spartans from scoring the rest of the first period, as they kept possession.

After three minutes into the second half, the Rebels earned a corner kick that led to senior Alyssa Granados passing the ball to her right. Julez Dominguez shot the ball into the net, increasing the lead to 2-0.

With 14 minutes left on the clock, Nailah Harpring kicked the ball past the Spartan goalkeeper to tack on a third Rebel goal. This marked the fifth goal of the season for the freshman.

“Everything we were working on this week, the team was so responsive and they were putting it together and it was really exciting,” Head Coach Jenny Ruiz-Williams said. “Cutos to our defense, but it’s not just our defense it’s from the top to the mid-field to the back to the goalkeeper. Everyone was just performing so well, I’m proud of them.”

UNLV’s defense and goalkeeper Emberly Sevilla continued to demonstrate strong game plays throughout the end of the remainder of the second-half, as they sealed their fourth shutout in six contests this spring.

The Rebels finish the weekend on Sunday with a rematch against Fresno State. The Bulldogs defeated them 3-2, about two weekends ago in California. Both teams have an identical 3-2-1 record. The kickoff for the game is set for 1 p.m.

“We have a lot to work on because we lost to Fresno last time we played them. They’re very organized and they were excellent,” Coach Ruiz-Williams said. “We have to be even more excellent, so we have a lot to work on.”
