The UNLV Rebels split a two game series against the Washington State Cougars from the PAC-12 this week.

Tuesday’s contest saw inclement weather through the bulk of the early frames, with rain and wind plaguing Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

The game was tied at three through the third inning, but a two run fourth inning led the Cougars to a 10-5 win in game one.

Wednesday’s game saw clear blue skies with gusts of wind still lingering around, however the Rebels came to play.

After an explosive second and third inning, the Rebels jumped out to an early 9-1 lead. The Cougars rallied back in the fourth and fifth frame, holding UNLV scoreless and scoring seven runs across the two innings. But UNLV would not be phased by the sudden burst of offense, as the Rebels scored six unanswered runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, putting the second game out of reach.

A season high 14 UNLV batters walked in the game, the most since 2011.

The hitting department continues to see upward trends, with the Rebels registering double digit hits for five straight games. First baseman Austin Pfiefer continued his hitting streak to eight games, while Jack-Thomas Wold recorded his team leading ninth multi-hit game of the season, and Diego Alarcon recorded his seventh of the year on Wednesday.

UNLV heads right back into Mountain West competition, as they head to Colorado to play Air Force in a weekend double-header. Saturday’s games are slated to start at 11:00 AM MT (10:00 AM PT) and Sunday’s starting at 12:00 PM MT (11:00 AM PT).
