After a physical game, Bailey Letherman for UNLV men’s soccer hit the game winning penalty in overtime against the division rival Utah Valley Wolverines, keeping the Rebels undefeated at home.
Both teams showed domination in defense in the first half, holding each other only to a combined six shots against goal (3 for UNLV and 3 for Utah Valley), only to speed it up in the second half to have 15 shots and 9 shots on goal combined.
Utah Valley ended up conceding a penalty shot to the Rebels in overtime and Letherman made them pay, drilling the penalty for the game winner.
“We have been in two overtime games already, so again it's hard to see what the emotion of the team is gonna be in overtime and our guys came out prepared,” Head Coach Rich Ryerson said after the thrilling win.
Letherman has been the top scorer this year, with two goals and three assists. He has also started every game this season.
“Yeah I was confident in stepping up to take it, I was more fortunate that we even got the penalty” Letherman said, “I mean I would have been confident with the other ten guys stepping up to take it either way.”
With a two day break until the next game, Coach Ryerson hopes to focus on recovery, and get a quick turnaround.
The Rebels will next play the Cal Baptist University Lancers at home on Monday March 22 around 1 p.m., followed by a longer break to play Dixie State on March 31.
