The UNLV Lady Rebels rebounded to a victory Thursday afternoon against the Boise State Broncos 74-62, after losing to them just 24 hours before. They managed to come back stronger both offensively and defensively.
"Today we definitely were where we like to be in the scoring column. The biggest thing we wanted to see was a better effort, and I wanted to come into halftime and at the end of the game and be able to answer the question, are we proud of our effort?” Head Coach Linda La Rocque said. “And I was able to do that today at halftime, and then obviously to finish the game the way we did in the second half.”
After falling behind at the start of the first game of the series, UNLV only allowed four points in the first eight minutes of the second, on the way to an 11-4 advantage.
The Lady Rebels limited the Broncos scoring throughout the entire game. After giving up 40 points to Boise State’s Jade Loville Wednesday, they held her to just 14 points Thursday. Loville only scored two points in the first half.
Though Boise State made a run during the end of both the first and second quarters, UNLV still held a 31-27 edge at the half.
The Lady Rebels made just 25% of their shots in the first half, but increased that percentage to 48.4%, sinking 15-of-31 in the second.
After suffering a loss on her Senior Day, Las Vegas native Bailey Thomas came back with a team-high 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while also posting three assists and three steals in the victory.
Delaynie Byrne and Desi-Rae Young both finished the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Nia Johnson added 13 points, while Jade Thomas was just three points away from all five starters finishing in double-figures.
"Proud of our response today, we have a young group and to have that kind of turnaround in such a short time was impressive,” Coach La Rocque said. “I know what we're capable of, now we have four games left in the regular season and we need that kind of effort every night."
UNLV is back on the road for back-to-back games for their rescheduled series against San Diego State. The games were originally scheduled for Dec. 30 and Jan. 2, but will now tip-off at 1 pm on Monday, Feb. 15, and 3 pm on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
