Monday’s win against the Lobos gave the Runnin’ Rebels their third consecutive season sweep against New Mexico, after they defeated them in Game 1 of the series on Saturday night.
The two games between the Rebels and the Lobos had two very different paces. Saturday night saw a much more consistent game on offense for the Rebels. They were able to get a 77-54 win, while shooting 50% from the floor. Monday’s game was much sloppier and dominated by defense. The Rebels shot just 36% from the floor and committed 15 turnovers.
The Lobos were able to get ahead early and held the lead until late in the first half. New Mexico Forward, Saquan Singleton, led the game in scoring at the half with 10 points. The Rebels didn’t get their first lead until the 1:52 mark of the half. Rebels’ leading scorer Bryce Hamilton was held to just two points in the first half, however, he was able to turn it on in the second half and lead the game as the high scorer with 14 points.
David Jenkins Jr and Moses Wood led the way for the Rebels in the first half. Both players scored eight points, but neither would score in the second half.
New Mexico struggled to get anything going in the second half. They were held to just 18 points the whole half and shot just 5-25 (20%), while also committing nine turnovers.. The Lobos had two stretches of five minutes or more being held without a FG in the second half, to go along with only scoring one basket in the final 5:40 of the game.
The Runnin’ Rebels will be looking to continue their three game winning streak when they host the Benedictine University Redhawks on Thursday, January 21. After that, they’ll resume Mountain West play when they host the Utah St. Aggies for their two game series on Jan 25 and Jan 27.
