Runnin' Rebels Set Multiple Academic Records

In a season plagued with bad news for the Runnin' Rebels so far, new academic records set during the fall 2020 semester have given the team something to cheer for.

Friday afternoon, the athletic department at UNLV announced that the men's basketball team broke multiple academic records for the fall 2020 semester. The program highs included cumulative GPA, semester GPA, and number of athletes on the Dean's Honor list.

“I am proud of the effort of our entire team and their focus on academics,” Runnin' Rebels head coach T.J. Otzelberger said in a press release. “It is a high priority in our program and it is gratifying to see all of the hard work pay off with these achievements.”

The Rebels achieved a semester grade point average of 3.57 for the fall 2020 semester, up from 3.25 in the fall 2019 semester.  This marks the third-straight semester that the Rebels have set new records for semester grade point average, and a new all-time high for the program.

The team also had all 15 student athletes with at least a 3.27 GPA for the semester, and a cumulative GPA of 3.32.  They also had nine student-athletes on the Dean's Honor List for the fall 2020 semester.  All three achievements are also all-time program-highs.

Student assistant coach Cheickna Dembele graduated Tuesday with a B.S.B.A in international business as well.  Dembele played for the team from 2016-20 as well.
