COVID Cases Spike Canceling Rebels Football On Saturday

UNLV has yet to face a cancelation this season due to COVID, their opponents for this Saturday already have had a game be postponed and now once again the Colorado State Rams will fall victim to a COVID scare as the Rebels will take precaution.

With rising cases of the Coronavirus in the Las Vegas community, the pandemic strikes again to cancel the fifth game of the 2020 Rebel football season.

Over the course of the preseason and during the season, more than 2,600 tests have been administered to UNLV football student-athletes, coaches, and staff with a positivity rate of less than 0.6 percent.

“Based on four positive COVID-19 test results in our football program, the resulting contact tracing, and consulting with our medical and epidemiology experts, UNLV will not travel this weekend for its scheduled game at Colorado State,” UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois said.

Despite the efforts of everyone in the program, the surge of cases in Las Vegas has proven that the best decision for the health and safety of all involved would be to cancel the upcoming game to avoid out of state travel. This is the first game of the season to officially be canceled.

“We are very disappointed to not be playing CSU this weekend but understand the circumstances. The health and safety of our players and staff remain our top priority and we are proud of the lengths everyone has gone through to play football in 2020. We look forward to playing again as soon as possible,” Head Football Coach Marcus Arroyo stated for the press release.

Fingers crossed the Rebels will be able to finish out their season, but as we all try to get a handle on the pandemic the health and safety protocols are going to take top priority.

The Rebels’ next game is currently scheduled for next week at Allegiant Stadium against Wyoming. At this time, that game is still scheduled, but we will continue to follow any further developments.
