Unfortunately, the Raiders were unable to get out of their own way in the 4th quarter and fell to the Bills 30-23.
Josh Allen led the Bills on an eight play, 75-yard drive opening drive, capped off by a 26-yard pass to Gabriel Davis. The Raiders answered back with a 54-yard field goal from Daniel Carlson to make it 7-3 on their opening drive. Josh Allen continued his brilliant play on the next drive, capping off another 75-yard drive with a touchdown pass to Cole Beasly. The Raiders next drive ended the same way the first did. After a 49-yard pass from Derek Carr to Nelson Agholor was called back due to an illegal formation penalty, a Daniel Carlson field goal made it 14-6. The Bills added another field goal shortly after to take a 17-6 lead. Just before halftime, the Raiders finally put the ball in the endzone. With 13 seconds remaining in the half, Carr found Jason Witten streaking across the endzone to make it 17-13 heading into halftime.
The Raiders got the ball to begin the second half and made another field goal to cut the lead to one. Up to this point, the Raiders had four possessions and scored four times. Only one of those possessions, however, ended with a touchdown. The Bills on the other hand, had three possessions with two touchdowns. The teams exchanged punts and the score remained 17-16 entering the fourth quarter. At the end of the third quarter, Josh Allen found John Brown on a 14-yard pass that was ruled just shy of the endzone. To start the fourth quarter, Allen ran the ball in from the half-yard line to give the Bills a 23-16 lead. Kicker Tyler Bass missed the extra point, keeping the game a one-score game.
The fourth quarter became the Silver and Black’s undoing. After moving the ball against the Bills defense, newly acquired cornerback Josh Norman punched the ball out of Darren Waller’s hands, causing a fumble recovered by the Bills. The next play, Allen connected with Stefon Diggs for a 49-yard bomb to give the Bills the ball inside the Raider 10-yard line. Two plays later, Devin Singletary ran the ball into the endzone to give Buffalo a 30-16 lead. The Raiders then turned the ball over on downs, giving the Bills the ball in field goal range and it looked like that was the end. However, a 14-yard sack on third down knocked the Bills out of field goal range and gave the Raiders life. After moving the ball into Bills territory, Quinton Jefferson forced Carr to fumble the ball. Once again, the game looked to be over. The Raiders never quit though, and Carr found Nelson Agholor with 1:29 remaining to make it a one-score game. Unfortunately, the comeback was not meant to be, as the raiders failed to recover the onside kick. The Bills hung on to win 30-23 handing the Raiders their second straight loss, and first at Allegiant Stadium.
Derek Carr finished the game 32/44 with 311 yards and two touchdowns but committed a costly turnover in the final six minutes of the game. Josh Allen continued his stunning level of play, passing for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns. Missed opportunities in the redzone, along with two costly turnovers cost Las Vegas the game today.
The Raiders fell to 2-2 after starting the season 2-0. Despite the loss, the Raiders still maintain sole possession of second place in the AFC West. The Raider defense, which struggled to contain the Bills offense, faces an even bigger test with the Kansas City Chiefs and Superbowl MVP Patrick Mahomes next week.
