It turns out that rumored contract was not a rumor after all. The Golden Knights have resigned Robin Lehner to a 5 year $25 million AAV extension as first reported by Frank Seravalli of TSN Sports on Oct 3.
The Swedish-born goaltender came over to Vegas at the trade deadline in exchange for Malcom Subban, Slava Demin, and a second-round pick in the 2020 draft.
Lehner posted a 3.01 goals against average and a .918 save percentage while playing in Chicago. His numbers significantly improved since coming to Vegas. Despite only playing three regular season games, he posted a 1.67 goals against average and a .940 save percentage and one shutout.
Lehner backstopped the Golden Knights to a trip to the Western Conference Finals for the second time in three years. In the playoffs, Lehner posted a 1.99 goals against average, a .917 save percentage, and four shutouts. His best performance came in game 7 against Vancouver. Despite not facing a large volume of shots, he made the save of the playoffs to keep the game scoreless.
The Golden Knights currently sit over the allotted $81.5 million salary cap (per Capfriendly), and will need to make some other moves to insure they are in compliance. With free agency beginning on Oct. 9, and other players like Chandler Stephenson and Nick Cousins to potentially sign, some major changes will need to happen to the roster. Unfortunately, this most likely spells the end for Marc-Andre Fleury’s time in Vegas. His seven-million-dollar cap hit makes little sense to keep now, so Vegas will likely look to find a team willing to take on his contract.
Do you agree with the contract? Does this spell the end for Fleury? What other moves might the team make? Let us know what you think.
