Martinez, who has one year left on his $4 million dollar deal, comes to the Golden Knights in exchange for two second round picks- one in 2020 and one in 2021. The Kings are reportedly not retaining any of Martinez’s current contract (per Pierre Lebrun of TSN Hockey). The deal does not include any active players or prospects being sent over from the Golden Knights as well.
Martinez comes to the Golden Knights with 8 points (1 goal 7 assists) through 41 games played for Los Angeles. Martinez averaged just over 22 minutes on ice per game for the Kings, second only to Drew Doughty. He is a defensive-minded defenseman who will most likely pair with either Nate Schmidt or Shea Theodore. He is a 10 year NHL veteran and a two-time Stanley Cup Champion. He is best known for his cup clinching goal in a double overtime thriller against the New York Rangers in game 5 of the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals. Martinez will make an immediate impact on this roster, potentially playing big minutes on the penalty kill.
The Golden Knights next game is Feb. 20 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Golden Knights Coach Pete Deboer has confirmed that Martinez will be in the lineup for that game.
