The vigil in the Student Union courtyard where UNLV students and fans gathered to pay their respects, telling stories on how Bryant impacted their lives.
“Kobe meant to me... in a sense of just being inspiring and keep on pushing of what you believe,” UNLV WOCC president Deanna Hughes said. “That’s what resonated with me. He got me to where I am now.”
Hughes, who could not attend the memorial service in her hometown of L.A. due to school, decided to organize the vigil - holding a moment of silence for 24.8 seconds in honor of the basketball legend's jersey numbers.
"I'm going to bring the vigil to the Las Vegas because I know I'm not the only one."
Near the end of the vigil, one person placed a trash can in the middle of the crowd for others toss balled-up paper into and shout "Kobe!" - a reference amongst school kids who grew up watching Bryant play for the Lakers.
