The Vegas Golden Knights come out on top against the St. Louis Blues, 5-4, in what will likely be a Game of the Year candidate.
The Golden Knights came into Saturday’s game six points behind the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference standings. Both teams have the lead in their divisions. The Knights, who came into the game riding a three game winning streak, were looking to end their four game losing streak to the defending Stanley Cup champions, dating back to last season.
Knights fans were definitely feeling the blues after the first period, when Vegas went to the locker room down 3-0. Alex Pietrangelo started off the scoring with a goal just 30 seconds into the Blues first of three power plays. Jaden Schwartz and Oskar Sundqvist would also add goals before the first period would end.
The second period didn’t get off to the start that the Golden Knights were looking for either. They were held without a shot on goal until there was about 7:30 to go in the period.
However, once the Knights got their first shot, they didn’t stop shooting. Vegas was able to get two goals on 11 shots before the end of the period. The first goal, scored by Ryan Reaves, was his first goal in eight games against his former team. Paul Stastny’s goal in the second period was his 31st point in 27 games against the Blues in his career.
Vegas would tact on two more goals, one of which was by Nicolas Roy for his second career goal, in the third period to take a one-goal lead against the Blues. However, the lead wouldn’t last too long. David Perron was able to tie up the game at four with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. This was the first goal he has scored against his former team, the Golden Knights, and it was the Blues’ second power play goal of the game.
After many attempts on goals for both teams and a very exciting back and forth, the game would go into OT.
Three minutes into overtime, the newly acquired Chandler Stephenson was able to get a steal and was on the breakaway. He was able to lift his backhand shot past the Blues goalie, Jake Allen, to give the Golden Knights the 5-4 victory.
The Golden Knights are looking to continue their winning streak when they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, January 7 at 7:00pm in the Fortress.
