Minicamps are officially underway this week for teams participating in the newly formed XFL football league.
The XFL is a new professional football league owned by Vince McMahon, the owner of the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). This league had previously been around in 2001, but folded after just one season. This time, McMahon is looking to do it the right way to make it a success.
The league consists of eight teams, Dallas Renegades, Houston Roughnecks, Los Angeles Wildcats, Seattle Dragons, DC Defenders, New York Guardians, St. Louis Battlehawks and Tampa Bay Vipers. Each team will have up to 52 men on their roster, 48 of which will be active for each game.
The XFL’s inaugural season will start on Saturday, February 8, 2020 and will have the championship game on Sunday, April 26, 2020. The season will have a 10-week regular season, followed by one round of playoffs with the top two teams in each conference playing each other. The championship game between the conference winners will follow to end the season.
With the minicamps underway, the Los Angeles Wildcats will be calling Las Vegas home for the following two weeks. They will be holding their minicamp practices at the new Fertitta Football Complex on UNLV’s campus.
For now, as with any new season starting, the coaches’ main goal is to get the players back in “football” shape. Their practices are mainly just conditioning and weightlifting for now. The team’s on-field practices should be ramping up in the coming days once the players have gotten better with their conditioning.
Following each team’s minicamps, they’ll take some time off for the holidays. Starting in January, all teams will be holding their training camps in the Houston/southern Texas area at various locations. This time will be used for the teams’ coaching staff to decide which players will be making their final rosters for the season.
