The 2-hour barrier was broken by Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge, finishing with a time of 1:59:40 at the 2019 Vienna City Marathon. Critics of Kipchoge, particularly other runners, have complained that Kipchoge and other runners who wear the Nike Vaporfly are set to perform unfairly better than the their competition.

Runners who wear the Nike Vaporfly are statistically shown to perform above average, but to say they hold an advantage is not necessarily right. The shoes do have good technology (Zoom X Midsole, Carbon fiber plate) but basing the argument solely based on the shoes overlooks the training and conditioning that these athletes spend so much time on. The shoes moreover are meant to help the health of runners' bodies with its technology. The issue helps more of Nike as a brand, as more people become interested in a shoe that supposedly makes them faster.
