Following its victory against Vanderbilt last Saturday, UNLV Football was back on the road to play Fresno State in its only non-Saturday game of the season. The Rebels lost 56-27 after turning the ball over five times, allowing Fresno to pick up its first conference win of the season.
The first quarter finished with Fresno taking the lead with seven points after UNLV only managed to get one field goal in from kicker Daniel Gutierrez. UNLV wide receiver, Randal Grimes then scored a touchdown after a 12 yard pass from Kenyon Oblad, followed by another field goal from Gutierrez. This gave the Rebels a small lead at the beginning of the second quarter. However, this was short lived when, not even a minute latter, Fresno scored a touchdown followed by a field goal that gave them the lead which they would maintain for the remainder of the game.
With less than two minutes left of the second quarter, the Rebels scored their second touchdown of the game made by Noah Bean with a pass from Oblad, followed with another kick from Gutierrez. With this play, Bean became the first Rebel this season to post at least 100 yards receiving in a game.
The game went into the half with Fresno leading 28-17. During the third period UNLV only managed to score a 22 yard field goal from Gutierrez, while Fresno player, Justin Rice got a touchdown for the Bulldogs, followed by a kick from Cesar Silva.
The fourth quarter was filled with three touchdowns and filed goals from Fresno, but Grimes did manage to get in the last touchdown of the game for UNLV with a 12 yard pass from Oblad and a final kick form Gutierrez.
UNLV's loss was largely due to the lost turnover battle by a 5-0 margin, as Fresno scored 28 points off turnovers.
"When you turn the ball over five times, you are not going to win the game,” said head coach Tony Sanchez.
The Rebels will be back at Sam Boyd Stadium on Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. to host San Diego State.
