The Las Vegas Lights missed a special opportunity on Saturday after losing to Reno 1868 2-0. The opportunity, of course, would be earning a spot in the PSL playoffs.
The start of the match started off competitively as each side made it difficult to score a goal until midway of the first half when Reno’s Javan Torre scored the first goal, giving them the lead.
Although the Lights had a few chances to score a goal, they continued to come up short every attempt they possessed. In the second half of the matchup, the Lights continued to miss the mark as they aggressively attempted to score a goal.
As the Lights continued their mishaps, they still showed heart and character throughout the game as the emotions of the players flooded the field. Reno eventually scored another goal midway through the second half as Abdulkadir Haji made the goal to put Reno in the lead 2-0.
“That second goal killed us, we had the opportunity,” Lights head coach Eric Wynalda said. “It’s an unfortunate error, maybe it is a miscommunication between our goalkeeper and our defense.”
Head coach Eric Wynalda only had a few days to prepare for the big game, but he still was able to see his team fight throughout the season. Although the team will miss out on the postseason due to the point system, Wynalada still sees a bright future for the Lights to come for the following years.
The matchup was not just Lights vs. Reno. It was just another addition to the long and historic rivalry between the two cities. Over 10,117 fans attended the match.
