Defenseman Zach Whitecloud scored his first game-winning goal of his career, helping the Golden Knights defeat the Anaheim Ducks for their third win in a row on Tuesday night. But after the team suddenly cancelled their postgame interview Zoom call and Wednesday’s practice, the team’s immediate schedule is now in question.
Tonight’s game was the first to feature the Knights reverse retro red jerseys, which pay tribute to Las Vegas’ past minor league hockey clubs. The red is the Wranglers (2003-2014) with the strips being inspired by the Thunder (1993-1999).
Chandler Stephenson kicked off the game, scoring the first goal of the night. He took a pass from Mark Stone to shoot a shot in between the legs of the Ducks goaltender Ryan Miller. The assist gave Stone his 400th career point.
Johnathan Marchessault added to the Knights lead with his redirected shot from Reilly Smith to finish the first period 2-0.
Second period started with Alex Tuch scoring another goal. He took a pass from Cody Glass to shoot above Miller’s glove.
The Ducks finally got the swing of things with a goal of their own by Isac Lundestrom. Glass earned his second assist after giving the puck to Nicolas Roy to shoot the fourth goal of the night ending the second period 4-1.
The Anaheim Ducks entered the third period geared into motion, with three consecutive goals against Marc-Andre Fleury that tied the game at 4.
With 3:56 left in regulation time, William Carrier sent the puck towards the net and Whitecloud found himself rebounding the shot for a goal of his own. The goal awarded the Knights with the winning score (5-4) and Whitecloud his second goal of the season.
About 10 minutes after the final buzzer, the Golden Knights announced that no players or coaches would be available for postgame interviews. The communications team released a statement that read: ‘Due to COVID-19 protocols, tonight’s Vegas Golden Knights postgame media availability is canceled. We will provide additional updates when appropriate.’
The communications team also announced late Tuesday that the team’s next practice, scheduled for Wednesday, was also cancelled. The Golden Knights and Ducks are scheduled to play again at T-Mobile Arena Thursday night, but due to the sudden cancellations, that game could be in jeopardy. The NHL would likely announce any schedule changes on Wednesday.
